Our focus area is "strengthening families." Our members are committed to improving the lives of others with programs that address areas such as parenting, health and well-being, early childhood intervention, life skills development, domestic violence, education and children and youth in general.

Our membership of more than 800 women contributes over 20,000 hours in volunteer services each year. (read more)

Kids in the Kitchen

The Junior League of Montgomery will host The Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen on Saturday, April 17,  2010 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Eastdale Mall.. This Association-wide initiative is designed to address the growing issues of childhood obesity and poor nutrition at the grassroots level. The Junior League of Montgomery has a history of involvement in important community issues, and this initiative builds on our heritage, as well as the heritage of the 107-year-old Junior League movement.

Since the early 1970s, the number of overweight children ages 12-19 in the United States has doubled, and the number of overweight children ages 6-11 has tripled. In the past 5-10 years, studies have shown that more than 16% of young people ages 6-19 are overweight. Similar statistics appear in Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom. By promoting family health through innovative programming, this initiative builds on a Junior League tradition of improving childhood nutrition, which started with our founder, Mary Harriman.

In recent months, many news articles and studies have shown that childhood obesity is beginning to reach a plateau due to awareness-building efforts and programs like this one. These results prove the ability of organizations and communities to work together to tackle major issues and truly make a difference.

In 2006, the program's first year, over 225 Leagues held Kids in the Kitchen and media coverage reached over 80 million people with messages about the issues surrounding childhood obesity and the Junior League's initiative to address these. The program is now an ongoing initiative of The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. and is currently in its fourth year. To date, over 250 Leagues have participated in the initiative with media coverage reaching over 450 million people. Together with our sister Leagues, we have an extraordinary opportunity to help combat potential health problems among today's children and help put the issues surrounding childhood obesity at the top of our nations' agendas. At the same time, our involvement with this initiative enables us to emphasize our leadership position in the social activism/volunteerism arena and perpetuate the Junior League brand well into the 22nd century.
