Junior League of Montgomery Builds Science-Based

Discovery Village

Playscape for Area Children!

We Did It! After months of planning, organizing and fundraising followed by 10 intense days of construction, the Junior League of Montgomery (JLM) completed one it its most exciting and rewarding projects yet.  What began as an ambitious idea is became a reality during our 2004-2005 membership year. The Discovery Village Playscape was the League's first "signature project" in which the organization joined forces with the community to build a permanent structure that will benefit our area. We are proud to have lead the effort to build a play area in which children will have the opportunity to learn, discover and play all at the same time.
Our adventure began with Design Day, held on Tuesday, October 12, 2004. Architect Dennis Wille of Leathers and Associates, along with local elementary schoolchildren, put their imaginations to work and designed a truly unique playscape that would be both fun and educational.

That evening, during the JLM's membership meeting, the initial plans for the playscape were announced, along with the location: Kiwanis Park in Old Alabama Town.

More than 40,000 schoolchildren visit the outdoor museum annually.  That number combined with countless other visitors meant that thousands of children would have access to a fun and meaningful educational activity.

What makes Discovery Village special, in addition to its purpose, is that throughout every phase of its development it was truly a community effort. Area schoolchildren had the unique opportunity of creating its design. Art students from Lee High School designed its logo, and finally, our community turned out in flocks to help build it.

Discovery Village broke ground on the first day of the build, Friday, April 22, 2005 and the Grand Opening was Thursday, June 2, 2005. Special guests Big Mo and Ronald McDonald were on hand to help with our celebration.

We hope that you will visit and enjoy the Discovery Village playscape!
